Understanding the connection

My name is Curtis Mayfield Harvey Jr, and here to give students the best experience they can get with a private saxophone teacher.

I’ve been in love with music all my life and have spent more than 30 years playing different instruments across the spectrum, but 25 years specifically specializing in different versions of the saxophone. Tenor is the primary sax I play, but I also play Alto and Soprano.

My current focus is beginning students that are between the ages of 8-13 but I’m open to all ages that can comfortably hold a saxophone, adults included!

One of my greatest joys is helping young (or young at heart) students experience the thrill of playing a musical instruments for the first time and create that deep love and connection to it.

When I work with a student, I focus on Music Theory and History, sight reading, playing by ear, fingering technique, a long with sound and tone. The bases of the book portion of my lessons are from “Tradition of Excellence” music books that are standard in many elementary and middle school bands, so your child will receive additional practice and support on their musical journey. In addition a fair amount of it will be based on the tricks and tips I’ve learned and picked up from my years of playing.

I teach classical, jazz, pop and contemporary music and really whatever the student is gravitating toward. I’ve found that teaching this way keeps students engaged and excited about music while developing a strong foundation. No reason they can’t learn Beethoven, Coltrane, and Beyoncé.
